Why are Colombian flowers so famous?

Colombia has an incredible biodiversity, with more than 130,000 different plant species thanks to the range of climates and eco-systems.

The near-perfect year-round conditions are ideal for commercial flower production, which is why its flowers are so famous.

The country’s main flower-growing area is on the savannah around the capital Bogota, because it has consistent temperatures and the same amount of light every day (around 12 hours).

Colombia also has no seasons as it’s on the equator. Also, the varied landscape means that cold-climate flowers as well as warm-climate flowers can all grow in the country.

On top of this, 100,000 years ago the savannah was a lake and even though it’s dry now, it still has a dense, clay-rich soil and a massive network of wetlands, tributaries and waterfalls, perfect for flower-growing.

Roses are by far the country’s most popular and carnations are considered the best in the world for their quality, beauty and longevity.
